Are there any drugs that can be given to a pt to PREVENT them from being sensitized to foreign Ag's?

Fri, 07/23/2010 - 16:37
Is there such a beast? Like transplant anti-rejecion meds but for transfused blood?
If so, why doesn't averyone get it? No Ab's would be made, no Ab:Ag reactions to worry about and we'd all be out of a job...

Audit disclosure

Fri, 07/23/2010 - 14:11
What are your policies toward inspectors / assessors and revealing the results of your internal audits?
I attended a Joint Commission conference many years ago where one of the surveyors indicated TJC would never ask for the results of internal audits, and it's likely FDA would not either; however, they cautioned against refusing to provide the results to FDA.

During a recent AABB assessment I "refused" to provide the results of the audits and AABB reluctantly accepted my decision.

My feeling is that if our internal audits are open for review there could be a perception of performing less than thorough audits for fear of getting "caught" and possibly cited The intent of an audit is to make an honest attempt at improving.

Deferral for double-unit plt donation

Fri, 07/23/2010 - 12:47
Hello,

How often can a platelet apheresis donor donate:
  • If he is a routine donor?
  • If he donates one concentrate?
  • If he donates a double concentrate?
  • If he donates a double concentrate and is a directed donor?
All the scenarios are given that the donor's platelet count pre-donation is
> 150,000.

Thanks
Liz :)

irradiation of blood products

Thu, 07/22/2010 - 14:08
We currently do not have a blood irradiator in our Blood Bank but are working with our Radiation Oncology department to provide this service. I would like to know if any other facilities are irradiating products this way and what steps you took to validate the process. Also, we are currently not inspected by the FDA and were wondering if this would open us up to an inspection. Any information would be appreciated.

Thu, 07/22/2010 - 05:43
Hi there! My name is Wendy Beeler and I am excited to join you on this site. I am a generalist with 24 yrs expeience. I am a lead tech in heme and blood bank at a rural community hospital. Just recently obtained my master's in Health Service Administration. Decided that wasn't enough - am going back to school on line through Michigan State. Have already learned lots from this site and am looking forward to learning more from your vast experience!

Red Cell Loss for Double RBC Donors

Wed, 07/21/2010 - 20:22
Apheresis RBC donors are deferred for 16 weeks but due to cumulative RBC loss, they cannot get a third collection in (with our calculations) within the 12 month period. Wouldn't it be a lot easier (for us) if AABB/FDA extended the deferral to 18 weeks?

How antibodies work in our Body?

Wed, 07/21/2010 - 15:08
Hi guys,
Acting as the body's army, antibodies are proteins generally found in the blood that detect and destroy invaders, like bacteria and viruses. Part of the immune system, antibodies come in different types, called isotypes. Mammals carry five isotypes. Each performs a different role in the body. If you have any more Ideas and tips then feel free to share here.

Thanks..

Acid Elution

Wed, 07/21/2010 - 14:17
I'm not happy having to pay the exhorbitant price of the commercial acid elution kit (@$50/test!). Has anyone tried making up the reagents for doing acid elutions? I've done an internet search as well as searching through my old text books looking for a recipe and haven't found anything yet.
Has anyone tried this? Does it work ok? Is it cost effective? Am I just being a cheap old SOB?

gloves on while handling units

Wed, 07/21/2010 - 12:14
We were sited in a state follow up ipost JC inspection for not wearing gloves when we got a unit of blood out of the refrigerator to issue to a nurse. We had taken our dirty gloves off before doing this. Does anyone know of any regulations requiring this or not requiring? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Mary
